The exhibition and extensive accompanying events programme shed light on artists’ positions in East Germany and encourage a new reading of art from the GDR. The project is a KVOST initiative and is taking place in cooperation with neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst (nGbk), Mitte Museum, and Werkbundarchiv – Museum der Dinge. The exhibition draws on the checkered life stories of nine artists and their works, ranging from painting, sculpture, and ceramics to photography. On that basis it shows how differently the nine addressed the political and social conditions of their day. To what extent did sexual orientation influence their artistic practice and their careers?

The construction site—for many a symbol of amplified, even toxic masculinity—is, for me, rather a place of exhaustion and fragility, where hidden fears, frustrations, and social and physical pressures accumulate. Patryk Kujawa

SOLOMIYA STUDIO @ KVOST

From 5.02. to 19.02.2025, KVOST will host the "Solomiya Studio" festival curated by Solomiya Magazine. KVOST will be a meeting place to discuss art and politics, see works of art and films, read books and magazines, drink tea and eat Borscht. KVOST will be open daily from 2 pm.

The theme of the festival focuses on various forms of violence. Starting with colonial violence, ecocide, the fragility of peace agreements, and the rise of far-right parties in Germany, the festival will highlight power dynamics and their abuse.

Solomiya Magazine was founded in April 2022 in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. From visual art to personal stories, the magazine showcases the work of emerging and established artists from Ukraine and beyond, reflecting an environment marked by unprecedented imperial aggression.

The magazine is designed by the design office Kollektiv Scrollan and published by SHIFT BOOKS. The Solomiya Studio festival is made possible by the “Impact Grant 2024” of the Supporting Act Foundation of WeTransfer and by the kind support of Fotopioniere L@N, Freiraum in der Box and Blumen Marsano.
