IZABELLA GUSTOWSKA

Since the 1970s, Izabella Gustowska has been one of the defining figures of conceptually oriented Polish art. Her work operates at the intersection of representations of the body, the construction of subjectivity, and feminist critiques of the image, exploring the conditions of visual perception as well as the cultural production of identity. As a professor at the University of the Arts in Poznań, she has influenced several generations of artists. She has gained international recognition through, among other things, her participation in the São Paulo Biennial (1983, 1987) and the Venice Biennale (1988).

For her presentation at KVOST, Gustowska is showing new works that engage with the themes of memory, identity, and temporality. The starting point is the family home in Poznań, where her family has lived since 1938 and which serves as both a biographical and cultural site of memory. The new works enter into dialogue with key works from the 1980s, created during her time at this location, enabling a retrospective examination of recurring motifs and questions within her oeuvre.
